Working with tricky gradients

Although a large space, the top of this garden had been unusable and difficult to maintain due to the steep gradient. Due to the aggressive gradient of the area, we needed to create an attractive retaining wall around the perimeter whilst maximising the space available.

We used this gradient to our advantage to create different layers and areas to enjoy. First, we stripped the previous turf and worked to even the whole area.
Once we had created a level space to work with, we created a railway sleeper retaining wall around the perimeter with a bistro patio area in the optimum position for sunlight. To finish, we laid new strips of turf to create an ideal area for relaxing, entertaining and soaking up the sunshine.
We also dealt with the shaded space behind the garage. We kept this simple, using sleepers, pebbles and paving to create an easy to use and versatile area.
